These are exciting times for the Fraternal Order of Eagles. As I travel the U.S.
and Canada, I am witnessing a renewed sense of enthusiasm and support. This enthusiasm
is reflected in our achievements, with our FOE membership numbers up and donations
to our charities and the Fraternal Order of Eagles Diabetes Research Center continuing
to gain momentum.
As you will see in Bettie Clark’s Fraternal Order of Eagles Diabetes Research Center
update this month, FOE representatives who attended the ceremony to present out
first $5 million check to the University of Iowa reported a tremendous reception
and response—including a standing ovation. This event helped spread the word that
the FOE is on the move and making great strides to impact the health and well-being
of people worldwide.
Several Past Grand Presidents met with The Fraternal Order of Eagles Diabetes Research
Center Committee in Grove City last month to discuss fundraising during the coming
year. The group developed plans and approaches to help us reach our second $5 million
donation during the coming year. The committee will share specifics about the meeting
during the coming weeks.
Yes, $25 million is a substantial sum. Yet, I believe that when we work together
we can accomplish just about anything! We have set our goals high and many aeries
are working hard to help us reach our objectives! I encourage every FOE member to
get involved with these efforts.
I would also like to remind you about my project, the FOE archives. As you probably
know, we will have two locations where FOE members can view items depicting our
colorful past—in Grove City, Ohio and Chehalis, Washington.
And, while we are excited about some of the one-of-a-kind items we already have
in our possession, we need your help to secure documents, clothing, jewelry, photographs
and more. Many of these articles may be hidden away in desk or dresser drawers,
basements and attics.
You’ve probably heard the adage, “one man’s junk is another man’s treasure”, which
may apply to FOE historical pieces. You may not think the pin, flag or photograph
you possess is very significant, but it may be just the piece we are seeking.
As we move forward with our 2010 theme “Eagle Horsepower: Preserving Our Past While
Riding into Our Future,” please keep your eyes open for items that can help us tell
the Eagle story. We are especially interested in pieces from 1898 to 1920. If you
have any questions, please contact the Grand Aerie at 614-883-2200.
With the Thanksgiving holiday upon us, Martha and I want to thank all of the aeries
that have hosted us to date. You have treated us like royalty and we appreciate
your efforts on our behalf. We also send our best to everyone for a safe and enjoyable
celebration.
