J.O.E. Clubs Target Youth

Junior Order of Eagles (J.O.E.) clubs represent the future of the Fraternal Order of Eagles. They are fun, educational, encourage responsibility and help shape the leaders of tomorrow.

Many aeries and auxiliaries are forming J.O.E. clubs, which are often self-supporting and guided by advisors from the local aerie and auxiliary. J.O.E. clubs are open to young people between the ages of 11 and 18 and any young person can join. Members do not have to be the son or daughter of an aerie or auxiliary member.

Every J.O.E. club has its own officers and follows a ritual during each meeting. J.O.E. clubs plan their own activities, which range from dances and bowling to skating parties, hay rides, stunt nights, sports competitions, campfires and campouts. J.O.E. Clubs conduct their own fundraisers and perform many types of community service, including beautification projects, providing assistance to the elderly, spending time with disabled children and aiding the needy.

Starting a J.O.E.

So You Want To Start A Club For Young Eagles. GOOD!! More and more Aeries and Auxiliaries are making that decision. The following is offered as a guideline:

  • Get permission from the Aerie to start such a club. Be aware of the responsibilities involved-providing adequate and clean quarters for meeting purposes, volunteer Aerie and Auxiliary members as advisors and above all, a lively interest in young people.
  • Set a minimum and maximum age for your youth group.
  • Experience has shown that it's wise to have one or more adults present at all club activities. They should be well versed in youth activities.
  • A real youth center has a well rounded, diversified program. An excellent way to be of service is to have the Aerie and Auxiliary make up a resource list (who in the group has special skills, etc.) This list can be invaluable, not only in helping your young Eagles tackle a program in some new field, but can serve the Aerie as well.
  • Recreation is becoming an important part in the everyday life of youths. It doesn't mean just music and dancing. Well planned recreation should provide an opportunity to exercise physically and mentally.
  • Everyone should have an opportunity to join in the fun of playing popular games at the club. Don't let a few "take" over the show. Have elimination contests. This gives everybody a chance to participate.
  • Both indoor and outdoor games should be planned. Though Aerie and Auxiliary help should be utilized when needed, the young Eagles should have a definite say in the programs undertaken.
  • If your club forms a particularly successful program, please share it with us so that we may add it to our active list.
  • A youth fashion show, publishing a little newspaper, working on an old automobile motor (by mechanically minded members of the club) point up activities that put fun into fundamentals.

A set of By-Laws is provided with this kit, but the Program Department feels strongly that activities should be the main concern of the youth clubs. They should not be hedged in by a long list of regulations, other than the few they set for themselves, subject to approval by the Aerie. Your club can look over the by-laws, etc., and can change, add or set their own by-laws as long as they are approved by the Aerie.

View a sample letter stating what you are going to propose to your membership. This letter, or a similar one, stating your wishes, should be run in your newsletter prior to opening your Junior Order of Eagles Club.

Youth Officers: Offices and Duties

We find, for the first year your club is starting, it is better to comprise your youth officers of the youth of Eagle members. If you are allowing outside members it is best to wait about one year before allowing them to hold office.

We would like to have a Junior Order of Eagles Club in each Aerie comprised of children from 11 to 18. When older, most of them always join the Aerie or Auxiliary. Make it easy to belong by issuing membership cards at no cost to them. Encourage a husband and wife to guide them and help them plan activities such as dances, either at night or in the afternoon, when there is no other activity planned. Other suggestions are dart games, pool tournaments, horseshoe pitching, baseball, hikes, etc. Try to plan trips, such as camping trips, bike trips and hayrides, anything to keep them off the streets.

The Aerie should encourage them to raise money for their club, either by having concessions at bingo parties, check rooms, or car washes, anything that will make them feel that they are part of something that is good. We, as adults, know there is a generation gap. So let's not leave it to them to close the gap. Let's start early to get them involved in the Eagles.

The Aeries can help get other teens off the streets by sponsoring Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, bowling leagues and many other youth activities. Let's show these kids what the Fraternal Order of Eagles is all about. One teen club spent a day at a park. A chartered bus took these 48 teens to a national park at a cost of $900.00 that they raised themselves. They also spent $1,200.00 improving the Aerie property with picnic tables, swings and other things that make it possible for back yard activities where the entire family can come at anytime and enjoy themselves.

Please don't forget the Art Contest that the Grand Aerie sponsors during the months of March and April. The name of the contest is, "What I Like Best about My Hometown." The winning entries will be displayed at the Grand Aerie National Convention.

LaGrande Aerie adopted a hobby club recently. The group was organized by Mrs. Carrie Romine whose father donated a small building in which the group could carry on activities. The kids staged a carnival and planned a tag sale to raise funds. Their efforts were a little short of their needs and at this point the Eagles stepped in.

Ligonier Aerie #2475 Goes All Out for Youth

Every Saturday afternoon the Aerie sponsors a dancing school. Twice a week, the Aerie home is the scene of weekly piano instructions. Recently the Aerie worked on an ice-skating pond so Ligonier kids can skate away this winter.
